While this is a book more than likely to be used in my weightlifting regime than thrown in a day pack to use on the field, I really similar this guide, particularly as a novice birder still learning to more effectively identify like species and birds by their flight and calls. It gives some info non listed in my smaller field guide and my phone app. I really like that information technology shows each bird all on one page and so in that location is no flipping or scrolling to see photos that illustrate the distinctions between juveniles and adults every bit well as the birds shape and wait in flight. It too gives imagery to each wing vanquish as well as explanations for similar species and how they differ. I too really like the nautical chart giving details on lifespan, social move, environmental condition, etc. Similar to my smaller guide, it also gives cursory explanation regarding voice, nesting, and feeding every bit well as maps and habitats. It's a nifty tool for browsing and further report...with the added benefit of helping me tone my biceps! ...more

This reference guide has all the birds, both eastern and western. That makes information technology super useful for me because in Utah we get migratory birds passing through the Salt Lake areas that aren't typically seen around here, peculiarly in the spring. I honey the full-size photos of the birds which makes identifying easier to see. But because the volume is so big, it'southward heavy to lug around. The color-coded pages make turning to the species of birds very easy though. The accompanying app is fun, although I have This reference guide has all the birds, both eastern and western. That makes information technology super useful for me considering in Utah we get migratory birds passing through the Table salt Lake areas that aren't typically seen effectually hither, peculiarly in the bound. I dearest the total-size photos of the birds which makes identifying easier to meet. Just because the book is so large, it'south heavy to lug around. The color-coded pages make turning to the species of birds very easy though. The accompanying app is fun, although I haven't had a take chances to utilise information technology while I'm out yet. I will keep my smaller Western bird volume (by the same author) in my birding bag for my quick referencing, just keep this larger volume in the motorcar with me! Both books take the same layout & usage, and then it was instantly piece of cake to apply. This is definitely a keeper for our birding expeditions. ...more

This large volume feels definitive. The photographs are lovely. It was not what I was expecting though. (I'g going to claim "user error" and blame myself, rather than the book.) I wanted more than of a field guide then I tin kickoff identifying some of the birds I see on my daily walks through the woods and down by the h2o. And this... is not that helpful for that purpose. Information technology'south simply too large, too overwhelming. But information technology's a beautiful book if you're sitting at home and want to learn almost birds.
